Summer Evenings at Villamartin Plaza

It has been some time since I have spent an evening at Villamartin Plaza on the Orihuela Costa and last night I was pleasantly surprised. Villamartin is an area known for its proximity to four championship golf courses; Campoamor, Las Ramblas, Villamartin and Las Colinas. It is an established residential area, as well as popular with holiday makers, and although inland, is only 15 minutes drive from the beaches. It has its own attractive plaza with numerous restaurants and bars and is also only five minutes drive from the rapidly expanding and popular La Fuente commercial centre also with many bars and restaurants, and only ten/fifteen minutes from the huge shopping centre, La Zenia Boulevard.

But I realised last night that Villamartin Plaza has a slightly different feel about it, almost exotic due to the tall established palms and beautiful foliage and the numerous green parakeets that are seen in the area. I could actually smell wafting jasmine when wandering through the Square. Right now, as it is August, it was buzzing with well-dressed people laughing and chattering under the palms, relaxed and happy to be dining outside, and on such a delightful warm evening.

There are a huge variety of places to eat and drink from the simple unstuffy bars to the more smarter restaurants such as Fairways, Eduardo´s (TOWIE restaurant!), The Square and Che’s. There are also many different types of cuisine to be found from Indian, Tex-mex, Italian, to British fish and chips to German food. We picked German for last night and I enjoyed a sumptuous meal of onion soup with cheese, then pork schnitzel (homemade) stuffed with ham and roquefort cheese at Olaf’s in the bottom left hand corner of the Plaza; a long-established restaurant. Food and service were perfect, but judging by the very many happy faces I could see all around, it seemed most people; whether holiday makers or residents were enjoying their evening.

Sometimes it is easy to forget how popular Villamartin Plaza has been for many years and how many people choose to rent property there to live, or holiday or to buy, enjoying their regular visits every year. Occasionally I have heard “Villamartin Square has gone downhill, quite rundown now etc.” Not true; the Square and the surrounding areas are lovely, and just as popular as they have been for years. If you are looking at property nearby, make sure that you pop into the Plaza for lunch or dinner and you will see how you can spend many happy evenings there, if you have not done so already.
