We are not suggesting that you would buy a property in La Manga just so that you can brag to your friends about having a cocktail with Matt Damon or The Spanish Royal family, of course not.
However, you just might like to know before you buy that you’ll likely be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s top celebrities, sports stars and big names from the world of politics, business and even royalty on the La Manga Strip.
Celebrities who have visited of late include, Robbie Williams, Jamiroquai, Cliff Richard, Gloria Estefan, Flamenco star Antonio Canales, Vonda Shepherd, Deep Purple, John Malkovich and British tennis’ Leon Smith. Even the European Union have held events here! (the EU Agrictural meeting, European Transport Ministers meeting and International energy conference).
Last year on one of the professional football pitches we saw a kick around amongst friends, between as they were then, Jurgen Kopp’s Dortmund and Anderlecht. Just a kick around on the Spanish Costa while getting a bit of sun for themselves at the same time. The football pitches hosted Real Madrid, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetesk, The English and Irish National squads, English ladies, and although it didn’t prevent their relegation this year, Newcastle United had a long weekend here in La Manga during the January Premier league weekend off, in 2016. They had been knocked out of the FA cup so got together in Spain for a few days.
It’s not like many other training events where fans are unwelcome… As a general rule here the fans and players all mix and the players are very willing to stop for photos with the locals.
We were uninvited yet very welcomed guests at the 20th annual Kenny Dalglish golf event this year in La Manga and Alan Shearer was lucky that my playing partner’s drive didn’t actually take his head off as it threatened to do once it left Mick’s driver.
“Geordie” Mick was as little star struck we think and we were just playing there on a Saturday morning when we realised that we were sharing the course with Pat Jennings, Liam Brady, Dave Beasant, Kevin Davies and 45 other ex-footballers enjoying the La Manga sun, and super golfing.
We are somewhat limited due to privacy in saying who actually owns property on La Manga but someone you won’t see living here is Sean Connery… He has sold up and moved Stateside but does still come back to see us in La Manga from time to time.
About the area
La Manga is a volcanic looking strip of land 24 km long located on the Mar Menor, Spain.
Alicante Airport is about an hour drive away and San Javier Airport is much closer, less than 20 minutes.
The unusual looking land mass was formed on the large saltwater lake of the little sea, Mar Menor with its shallow waters always slightly warmer and calmer than its big sister the Mediterranean.
The lagoon was designated a protected area by the UN and the buildings there, the new developments which are so popular with buyers from all over Europe, respect this fact. It’s impossible to ignore and not almost feel the volcano forming as you look across at the islands of Perdiguera, Mayor or Redonda. Tourism now is the main activity on La Manga, but it was not always like this.
The first inhabitants of La Manga built small wooden huts from mud and branches along the Mediterranean coastline 5,000 years ago, rather than the five-star resort we see today. Accommodation on La Manga has changed in the years since.
Iberians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and Greeks have built fish farms here and mined the vast silver deposits of the Sierra Minera. These days it’s the 73 km of coastline, the crystal warm waters and the promise of luxury, relaxation and some of Europe’s best golf that draws plane loads of investors and holiday makers to this corner of Spain on such a regular basis.
La Manga is not for everyone. If you are looking for a cheap repossession, a stag and hen haven or a party venue to rival Ibiza it is just not the place for you to be.
