CD Torrevieja 2 -1 UD Beniganim

Having previously criticised Torrevieja’s inabilty to defend set-pieces, it is only fair to give them fair praise when two attacking free-kicks lead to the winning goals.  Headers in each half, the first from the outstanding Quintero and the second from the impressive Javi Selvas saw CD Torrevieja lead Beniganim 2-0 before former Torrevieja striker Koeman pulled one back for the visitors.

For the high-noon showdown Pedreno was forced into changes once again.  With Carrasco suspended following his two-yellows-make-a-red at Torre Levante and Oscar nursing an injured wrist, Martin and Miguel were handed starts.  Adrian Banderas was also recalled to the starting line-up in place of Luis Carlos.

Neither side really got to grips with the game in the first half.  It was a scrappy affair which Beniganim were probably edging until Brani was fouled wide on the right.  The diminutive Ruben Suarez delivered a left-footed cross to the near post and Quintero rose highest to head Torrevieja into the lead.  It was the only moment of quality in the opening period.

Torrevieja came out of the blocks much quicker in the second half, and again it was a set-piece from the right hand side that led to their second goal.  Again it was Ruben Suarez with the delivery, this time sending the ball deeper to the far post.  Javi Selvas lept above his man to send the ball looping over Vaello for 2-0.  The game should have been comfortable from this moment, but Beniganim raised their tempo.  Just after an hour they got their reward, and a lifeline.  Koeman arrived unmarked at the far post for a simple tap-in to give the visitors a lot of hope.

Beniganim took control of the game from this moment, but were unable to force Miguel Serna into any form of save.  Torrevieja defended in numbers to collect a valuable three points.  Ironically, the side has played much better in recent weeks and not won but this should not be cause for too much concern.

The next few games for CD Torrevieja look like games that could give their season a momentum boost.  Next week is a trip to Bunol, who sit one place below them in the table.  The next “home” game is against Paterna on the 22nd at 1700h.  The game will take place at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, next door to the Vicente Garcia due to the pitch being resurfaced.  Paterna are also struggling, as are Recambios who Torrevieja end November against.

With the potential for nine points in the next three games, Torrevieja could head towards Christmas in a much stronger position than they currently sit, so optimism has to be high.

Goals:  Quintero, Javi Selvas

MOM:  Quintero
